I have heard it said that the closest you will be to God on this side of heaven is in those moments when you hold a newborn baby. From personal experience I would have to agree. I mean is there anything sweeter to the soul than holding the fresh newness of an infant to your chest as he is snuggled against you in a deep slumber? Their very scent is enough to send your senses into a joyful somersault and peaceful bliss experience simultaneously. Yes little ones are heaven-sent for sure in my book.
We have all witnessed a mother holding her sleeping baby or small child. Whether she is sitting or standing she has a tendency to both rock her child and sing or hum a soft melody while in the embrace. There is something very soothing that evolves between the gentle rhythmic motion and the tranquil sound of her voice. I believe that the peace that comes from that type of interaction is as much for the mother as it is for her child.
When my children were small oh so long ago–you know when you could make their world perfect with a kiss and a hug–I remember something so clearly. If one of them would fall I ran to their side and would scoop them up in my arms. I would wipe the tears and kiss them, reassuring them that all would be well again. More times than not I would take them to our favorite rocking chair and began to sing a lull-a-bye or hum a simple melody as I sat holding them letting them feel their mommy’s love. What a delight to my heart it was in knowing that I could fix the “boo boo” and all that was wrong in their tiny world even for just that moment.
Over the span of the many years in my faith walk, God has taught me so many life lessons in the simple everyday things. One of the sweetest lessons I learned took place one morning years ago as I sat doing my time of devotion with my Heavenly Father. The verse that I had just read was in the book of Zephaniah, a prophet of the Old Testament. This is what the verse said:
“The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”
Zephaniah 3:17
Almost immediately as I read these beautiful words of love, the Lord gave me a flashback of myself sitting with my own child rocking him in a chair and singing to him to soothe and comfort him. As I remembered that precious moment from years long gone my heart filled with that sense of overflowing love that a mother experiences when she embraces her son or daughter. As I sat there savoring the memory God revealed a precious truth to me. It was as though he was giving me a glimpse of the joy he receives when we allow him to embrace us! He is, after all, the perfect loving Father, the perfect parent. He is there in our midst ready to step in to pick us up when all seems wrong in our own world. Not only is God ever-present in our lives but…
He delights in us…
He quiets us with his perfect love…
He rejoices over us with singing.
GOD SINGS! He sings over us! I feel like I have to say that again. Beloved, GOD SINGS OVER YOU AND ME!!
So friend, be encouraged today. Savor this precious nugget of truth. God loves you. You are his delight. If you are hurting in any way I would ask you to stop for just a moment. Be still and listen. Your Father is running towards you. He is about to scoop you into his mighty arms because he has a song he wants to sing just for you! You are his beloved child that brings him much joy. Let him embrace you. There is no sweeter embrace…no sweeter song…than the one that comes for your Heavenly Father!
From my heart to yours,
Rosie <3
